We pride ourselves on having some of the best raft guides on the river. As one of the oldest companies guiding on the French Broad, some of our staff has river experience of upwards of three decades!
Our most veteran staff member is Tom Butler, who started working for us way back in 1982 (back then, we were known as French Broad Rafting Company.)
The 2013 season marks his 31st year as raft guide – which means he’s been on the river for longer than some of our newer staff members have been alive! Tom says it’s hard to nail down his favorite thing about being a raft guide, but he loves the water, the outdoors, and the variety of people he gets to meet.
Tom also works in Asheville as a firefighter, which he has been doing for 28 years. In his off time, he enjoys kayaking, canoeing, and mountain biking. If you can paddle it or pedal it, Tom’s probably used it on a nearby river or mountain trail.
Of course, when our newest attraction, the zipline course, was introduced, he made sure to train as a zipline guide too!
When rafting and zipline season is over, he heads up to work ski patrol at a local hill during the winter. His daughter, Deanna, is following in her dad’s footsteps – she recently checked out to raft guide and works on the All Terrain Images photography staff as well.
