Raft guides are colorful characters (if you’ve ever been on the river with us, you probably know this all too well.) The folks on our river and tree staff have a wide variety of backstories—veterans, grandparents, college kids, firefighters—but perhaps one guide we are most proud of is one that all children are sure to recognize.
Michael Witt might seem like your typical old guy at first glance, but around Christmas time, he gets a lot more noticeable. That’s because he’s Santa Claus! Just check out that white beard… believe us now?
A few years ago, in an attempt to help pay the bills up at the North Pole, Santa decided it would be best to look for a summer job, so he came to North Carolina to pursue his other lifelong passion: whitewater rafting! He was an instant success; despite his attempts to hide his true identity, Old Saint Nick—oh, sorry, I mean Michael Witt—discovered that he was adored by both children and their parents and rapidly ascended to trip leader status.
So parents, if your children are feeling iffy about getting into whitewater, you ought to let them know who they might meet if they decide to come. When making your reservation, feel free to request a specific guide. Mr. Claus does both raft and zip trips, and works just about every day!
(Also, don’t forget to tip your guide! You won’t regret it, especially around Christmas time.)
